As a District Court Judge he served rotations on the Civil, Domestic, Probate, Criminal and Juvenile dockets. Hale conducted numerous settlement conferences which resulted in the resolution of cases ranging from medical malpractice, to business litigation to domestic relations cases.

A 1967 graduate of the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, he worked briefly for Honeywell, Inc. before returning to the University of Colorado law school where he received his Juris Doctor in 1971.
Hale served as a law clerk for the Hon. Hatfield Chilson of the United States District Court in Denver until 1972 when he joined the firm of Calkins, Kramer, Grimshaw and Harring. He later worked as a Deputy District Attorney in the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office handling felony cases, eventually rising to the position of Chief Deputy District Attorney before departing in 1976. From 1976 until 1996 and his judicial appointment, Dan Hale worked at the Boulder firm of Miller and Gray, later to become Miller, Gray and Hale and eventually Miller, Hale and Harrison where he specialized in civil litigation and criminal defense work.

In 1987 Hale was named as one of the top lawyers in Colorado by the publication Best Lawyers in America. He continued to be recognized by that publication annually until his appointment to the Boulder District Court in 1996.
In 2004, the Colorado Judicial Department named Dan Hale as the Outstanding Judicial Officer of the Year. He has been selected to receive the Judicial Excellence Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) in 2006.

During the past thirty-three years Hale has been a member of and is a past President of the Boulder County Bar Association, served on the Board of Governors of the Colorado Bar Association, served on the numerous Bar Association committees and was one of the founders of the Boulder County Bar Professionalism Committee in 1989.
