Former Denver District Court Judge John Coughlin has a long distinguished history of private practice and public service in
Colorado. A Colorado native, Coughlin receive his Bachelor of Science from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California in 1968. He graduated from the University of Colorado’s School of Law with his Juris Doctorate degree in 1972. He was admitted to practice in Colorado that same year.
After his admission to the Colorado Bar, Coughlin served as a Deputy District Attorney in Denver for three years until 1975 at which time he took a position with the Denver firm of Moran Reidy Voorhees. After that firm merged with the national firm Kutak Rock, he continued in private practice until 1980.

Coughlin was made a partner at Kutak Rock in 1980. Shortly thereafter a notable career in the public court system began with his appointment to the Denver District Court. Until his affiliation with the Judicial Arbiter Group, Inc. in the summer of 2005, Coughlin served for twenty years in the Denver District Court in many capacities with the majority of time spent in the general civil assignment and in domestic relations. As a regular responsibility of his general civil assignment, Coughlin routinely conducted settlement conferences assisting parties in achieving out of court resolution. During the course of his District Court service, he also was assigned to criminal matters and as the assigned drug court judge.
John Coughlin attended the National Judicial College in Reno, NV on two occasions. One of those sessions focused specifically on the analysis and understanding of complex financial statements.

In 1992 Judge Coughlin received the Judicial Excellence Award from the Denver County Bar Association. The Catholic Lawyers Guild also awarded John Coughlin the St. Thomas More Award for service and judicial excellence in 1992.
John Coughlin is a long-time member of the Denver and Colorado Bar Associations. In 1984 he served on the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Bar Association and from 1984 until 1990 served on the Board of Trustees of the Denver Bar Association.
