Jim Carrigan earned his Bachelor of Philosophy and Juris Doctor degrees at the University of North Dakota and the degree Master of Laws (Taxation) at New York University Law School. He holds Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Colorado, Suffolk University, and the University of North Dakota. He has practiced as a general practitioner in North Dakota and a trial lawyer in Colorado. He has served as Colorado State Court Administrator, Regent of the University of Colorado and Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court. Most recently, he was a United States District Judge for the District of Colorado from 1979 to August 19, 1995. While in the latter post he sat by designation on the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Tenth circuit and the Federal Circuit.
The Chief Justice appointed Judge Carrigan to the U.S. Court of Foreign Surveillance and to the U.S. Judicial Conference Committee on Bankruptcy. Fellow Judges elected him to the national Board of Directors of the Federal Judges Association, and as Secretary, Vice President, and President (1994-95) of the Tenth Circuit District Judges Association. As a trial lawyer, Mr. Carrigan was elected a Fellow in both the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (Board of Directors
1995- ), and International Society of Barristers, as well as an Advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

He has been certified as an Arbitrator/Mediator by the national Patent Board. Currently he serves on the Board of the Metropolitan Football Stadium Commission, building the new Denver Broncos stadium.

Jim Carrigan was a full-time law teacher from 1957-60, and 1961-67, at the University of Colorado, University of Denver, University of Washington, and New York University (Post-graduate Tax Program).



While in practice, Jim Carrigan was a charter faculty member for the National Judicial College, where he taught regularly from 1964 through 1977. He was a co-founder and charter member of the Board of Trustees of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, has served as Chairman of that Board, and is still a member. In recent years he has served as a member of the A.B.A. Torts and Insurance Section Council and on several A.B.A. Commissions and Task Forces.
